This is a great opportunity for the community to come together for a fun, outdoor competition to help raise awareness about ovarian cancer and support the efforts of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.
The Stiletto Run Event began in 2008by Elmwood business owner, Sue Marfino, to support the mission of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. The event draws more than 400 runners for an event unlike any other!
In September 1997, leaders from seven Ovarian Cancer groups joined forces to form the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. Their primary goal was to establish a coordinated effort to place Ovarian Cancers education, policy, and research issues prominently on the agendas of national policy makers and women's health care leaders. It is the foremost advocate for women with Ovarian Cancer in the United States. To advance the interests of women with Ovarian Cancer, the Alliance advocates at a national level for increases in research funding for the development of an early detection test, improved health care practices, and life-saving treatment protocols.
Ovarian Cancer Accounts for approximately three percent of cancers in women. While the 11th most common cancer among women, Ovarian Cancer is the 5th leading cause of cancer-related death among women, and is the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers. It is projected that approximately 22,000 women will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer this year and 39 women will lose their battle with the disease every day.
